    Vanuatu Congregation 'Bursting at the Seams' Gets Bigger Meetinghouse

    Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the village of Mele, northwest of Port Vila, have a new and expanded church building to meet in each week.

    Around 200 members and guests of the Church met on 25 October to celebrate the completion of the Mele meetinghouse.

                     

    “The former Mele chapel could not accommodate the members who were attending meetings every Sunday,” said Yvon Basil, president of the Port Vila Vanuatu Stake.

    “It became a priority to build a new chapel that would cater to the number of members of the Church here in Mele.”

    The existing chapel was repurposed to classroom and office space then the new chapel block was added. A veranda was built to connect the two structures.

    Upgrades to the existing structures included classrooms, amenities, a basketball court and other facilities.

    The new house of worship and associated facilities will now accommodate the members and visitors to weekly services and other meetings and activities.

         

    The growth of the Church in Mele is good news, not just for Latter-day Saints, but also for the wider community, as Church members strive to serve and support their neighbours and friends.

    President Basil thanked all who have helped the Church complete the new meetinghouse, including the project manager and employees of Island Construction Ltd and the architects of Kramer Ausenco Ltd “for their dedication throughout the entire project.” 

                        

    President Basil announced that the meetinghouse will be opened for meetings following a dedication service on 3 December 2017.
