Representatives from eleven different faiths recently gathered to express messages of hope and prayers at the Old St. Michael’s Chapel in West Auckland, New Zealand for a “Prayers for Peace” event.

Sunshine emerged, after the rainy October morning, which reflected the feelings expressed by all who attended. Each of the faiths were represented by speakers who beautifully shared feelings of love for others, faith and love of God, and a desire for unity and peace in the community and world.

Anna Featherstone of West Auckland Women’s Interfaith Initiative organised the fifth annual event in recognition of the International Week of Prayer for World Peace. “This is such a special event, not just to bring together local faith leaders and faithful followers in one, but also to share the messages of peace, unity, and love,” she reflected.

“The feeling at this event is always so strong, we always wish we could bottle it,” she added. “Lasting peace takes constant work and a real willingness and commitment to walk the paths of righteousness."

Mila Masiasomua, a local leader from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, was the event’s concluding speaker. “As I think about our collective group here, I take comfort in knowing that our spiritual beliefs align; and that’s what is most important,” he said.

“No matter how difficult the situation, true disciples of Christ are peacemakers,” he continued. “We pray for peace throughout the world. We pray for inner peace, that we may know from what source it comes.

“May it be reflected in all nations as we share peace and love with those around us.”

The event concluded with the Sri Chinmoy Peace Runners sharing a lighted torch among those in attendance and the message of peace in the world.
