Christchurch Applauds ‘Meet the Mormons’ Movie

The closing credits rolled to a heartfelt round of applause from the approximately 200 people in attendance at the one night special screening of the US theatrical release of “Meet the Mormons” last night in Christchurch.

Director of Public Affairs for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Christchurch, Jennifer Beck, was very happy with the turnout.

“Our missionaries and local members worked together to invite Latter-day Saints as well as others not of our faith to the movie’s Christchurch premiere,” she said.

Sister Bertha Hurley, a member of the Christchurch Interfaith Council and a representative of the Catholic humanitarian organisation, Caritas, said the movie was “well done and enjoyable.”

Guests enjoyed mingling and refreshments at a pre-screening reception.

Christchurch Latter-day Saint leader, President Jared Ormsby, welcomed guests and thanked them for their support of the charity event. The movie-goers were invited to donate a gold coin for Caritas upon entering the theatre.

After the show as people were exiting the theatre many of them were asking when the movie would be available on DVD so they could watch it again with other family members and share it with their friends.

According to Jennifer Beck, “Meet the Mormons was a hit, and took the audience on an emotional roller-coaster ride with many tears being shed, smiles from ear to ear, but more importantly it provided a visual platform that helped those unfamiliar with our faith to gain a better understanding of who we are and what we stand for.”

The movie will be available in coming weeks on DVD, iTunes, Netflix and other platforms. People can also view it starting this month at the Church’s Hamilton New Zealand Visitors’ Centre.
