Bishop W. Christopher Waddell Sees Impact of Humanitarian Efforts in Samoa

Bishop W. Christopher Waddell, First Counselor in the Presiding Bishopric of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and his wife Sister Carol Waddell, arrived on the beautiful island of Upolu, Samoa on Thursday, January 23, 2025. They were accompanied by Mr. Doug Martin, Pacific Area Director for Temporal Affairs, and his wife Mrs. Evelyn Martin.

During his visit, Bishop Waddell observed firsthand the Church’s recent collaborative humanitarian efforts to lift and improve the lives of individuals, families and villages in Samoa.

Bishop Waddell met with organisation leaders and volunteers involved with humanitarian projects at Campus of Hope, Tupua Tamasese Meaole Hospital, Lauili’i Primary School, and the Pesega Dental Clinic.

Bishop Waddell expressed gratitude to organisation leaders and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to make a difference in the lives of many people.

The visit highlighted positive outcomes when churches, governments, communities, and individuals work together for better healthcare and education.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is actively involved in humanitarian projects across the Pacific and worldwide. Projects are funded by donations and supported by the volunteer service of Church members.

Speaking to a worldwide audience in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ October 2023 General Conference, Bishop Waddell explained why Latter-day Saints look to Jesus Christ and how this faith inspires them to help others:

“No leader has ever shown more courage, no humanitarian has shown more kindness, no physician has cured more disease, and no artist has been more creative than Jesus Christ.

“In a world of heroes, with monuments and museums devoted to the exploits of mortal men and women, there is One who stands above all others. I testify that Jesus Christ is not only our hero; He is our Lord and King, the Savior and Redeemer of mankind.”
