Latter-day Saint Rangi Parker shared her love of New Zealand and Latter-day Saint histories with attendees at an inter-denominational remembrance service at Hamilton’s Catholic Cathedral of the Blessed Virgin Mary recently.
Hospice Waikato, an organization that provides for the terminally ill, invited Mrs Parker and her husband Vic to participate in the inter-denominational service which was held on Sunday, 22 September 2013.
Mrs Parker spoke about the gathering, archiving and displaying of New Zealand historical artifacts that she and her husband have pursued for 25 years.
As part of her presentation she also sang ‘Tell Us the Stories of Long Ago’ (Mihi mai e koro) and ‘How Great Thou Art’ (Whakarea mai).
Several of the guests at the service expressed a desire to learn more about the Latter-day Saint and New Zealand historical display at the New Zealand Church History Centre in Temple View, Hamilton. The centre’s collection includes journals, letters, photographs, and audio recordings of New Zealand Latter-day Saints and missionaries who served in New Zealand in the early to middle decades of the 20th Century.
Mr and Mrs Parker volunteer at the New Zealand Church History Centre, providing tours upon request. Appointments to visit the centre can be made by calling 07 846 8803.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints places a strong emphasis on collecting, archiving and sharing artifacts of historical significance.
The Church and its members also actively pursue the development of interfaith relationships in communities across New Zealand and worldwide.
