Today on TVNZ’s Breakfast program, Dr Melanie Riwai-Couch shared the remarkable story of Elder Duane Isaac, a missionary who served in New Zealand from 1949 to 1951.
Duane Isaac’s family has recently returned a collection of his personal belongings to the Matthew Cowley Pacific Church History Museum, including beautifully woven kete (traditional Māori baskets). These items, considered taonga (treasures), hold deep cultural and historical significance.

Inspired by journal entries left by Elder Isaac, Dr Riwai-Couch would like to return the kete to the whānau (families) of the women who originally crafted them, preserving and honouring their legacy. This gesture aims to reconnect families with historical artefacts from their heritage and celebrate the enduring impact of faith and service.
During the TVNZ segment, Melanie also shared rare film footage taken by Elder Isaac in New Zealand circa 1950, giving insights into his missionary work, and highlighting the Church’s family-centred approach and cultural connections.
Can you help solve the mystery?
To support this initiative, a dedicated email address kete@churchofjesuschrist.org has been launched to receive public enquiries and help identify the original makers of the kete.
In the coming weeks a ceremony will be organised to enable the kete to be returned to their rightful whānau, celebrating shared history, faith, and community.
Pacific Public Affairs Manager for the Church of Jesus Christ, Richard Hunter, said, “Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that God is our Heavenly Father, and all human beings are His children. This opportunity gives families and others the chance to come together.”
He added, “Elder Isaac served as a missionary 75 years ago, teaching people the restored gospel of Jesus Christ. Now, thanks to this effort, we can continue his legacy of faith, family, and friendship.”
