New Mobility Equipment Brings Hope to Nauru

The Department of People Living with Disabilities (DPWD) in Nauru recently received a donation of 171 mobility aids from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The project began with a request from the late Riddell Akua of the DPWD to Elder Iota Tune, Area Seventy of the Church of Jesus Christ, seeking wheelchairs and walking aids to support individuals with disabilities.

A humanitarian team from the Church travelled to Nauru to assist with assembling and distributing the devices, as well as training local staff on proper fitting and maintenance.

On 20 October 2025, a hand-over ceremony was held at the DPWD facility, Meneng Starfonte House, to launch the initiative. During the event, the Honourable Charmaine Scotty, Minister for the Department of People with Disabilities, expressed gratitude to the Church of Jesus Christ for its donation, which included:

  • 106 wheelchairs of various sizes and models
  • 54 four-wheeled walkers
  • seven strollers

Throughout the week, 36 individuals were measured and fitted with their new mobility aids. Many recipients were elderly, amputees, or living with conditions such as cerebral palsy. For some, the new equipment replaced old, rusted wheelchairs that had long outlived their usefulness.

This humanitarian effort has brought renewed hope and mobility to many in Nauru, reflecting the Church’s commitment to serve all of God's children across the globe.
