Perth Women Reach Out to Teen Mums

Perth members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently collected items to donate to Teen Family Centre, an organization that helps teen parents and expectant parents, 24 years of age and younger, to continue to attend and complete high school.

Mari-Anna Reiljan-Dillon, of the Madeley area Relief Society, said, “Members simply felt compelled to assist and respond to this appeal.”

The women collected several packs of nappies, pre-used baby clothes and hand-crafted quilts as part of their contribution towards the Teen Family Centre.

The Teen Family Centre is the only one of its kind in Western Australia. Its unique location within the campus of Balga Senior High School offers flexible schooling opportunities to young and expectant mothers.

The Centre offers a fully accredited Child Care Centre for mums attending classes as well as a Young Parents Programme. The latter supports teen parents and pregnant teens as they build parenting and life skills whilst pursuing their wider education goals and working towards graduation from high school.

Rachael Elliot, Assistant Director of Teen Family Centre, said, “This generous donation by members of your church is much appreciated and will greatly assist the supply needs of young teen mums.”

The Relief Society intends to provide further and on-going assistance to this organization.
