A total of 980 kilograms (or just under one tonne) of non-perishable staple foods was recently donated to Foodbank Australia (WA) for distribution to families and individuals expereincing difficult circumstances, Western Australia.
The donation was in response to an appeal by Foodbank for urgently needed non-perishable staple foods in the months leading up to Christmas 2021.
Members of the Perth Australia Dianella Stake (or diocese) of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints responded to the Foodbank appeal.
In receiving the donated foods, Mr David Warren, Human Resources Manager of Foodbank Australia (WA) was overwhelmed by the generous donation of members of the Church and said that what was donated would provide for approximately 1,765 much needed meals.
Mr Warren further added “your generous donation will make a very real difference to those most in need in our community especially in the weeks leading up to Christmas."
At a formal handover event on Tuesday 17 December 2021, President Ryan Jenkinson, Stake President, Dianella Stake, said this is the eighth year that the Church has been involved in annual Foodbank appeals, and pledged continued support to this most worthy cause.
A total of 9.3 tonnes has been donated to Foodbank by Church members since inception of this initiative in 2012.
What is Foodbank?
Foodbank collects surplus foods from major supermarkets and wholesale distributers thereby reducing waste within the food industry. Foodbank also receives donated foods from food drives conducted by industrial and commercial groups, schools, churches and other charitable and welfare organisations. The food thus collected is then made available to individuals and families in need within the community.
What was donated by members?
Food items donated include packets of dry pasta, rice, breakfast cereals, canned vegetables, beans, peas and fruit, soups, jams, spreads, sauces and other non-perishable and long-life staples.
