Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Papua New Guinea "gratefully and humbly acknowledge the Lord’s hand in preparing a way for a temple to be built" in their country, according to a local Church leader, Smith Nalape, District President of Gerehu District.
After returning recently from visiting the Nuku’alofa Tonga Temple, President Smith said, “Having our own temple here in Papua New Guinea is a blessing for me and my family. I am so looking forward to the groundbreaking.”
Since President Russell M. Nelson announced the Port Moresby Temple in October 2019, committee members have anxiously awaited the groundbreaking dates to be confirmed.
Local Church members are preparing for the temple groundbreaking on 22 April 2023, which will mark the official commencement of construction.
In 2020 several Church members shared their feelings about having a temple built in their homeland. See video here.
“For many years it was just a dream for all of us, and now it’s a reality," said one Church member. "We appreciate the blessing Heavenly Father has given us. This is our blessing and we do not intend to take it for granted.”
