New Zealand Saints Welcome News of Wellington Temple Groundbreaking

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Wellington New Zealand welcomed the news this week that groundbreaking services for the Wellington New Zealand Temple will be held on Saturday, August 2, 2025.

Elder Taniela B. Wakolo, First Counselor in the Pacific Area Presidency, will preside at the event. Attendance at the site will be by invitation only.

In a letter from the Church’s First Presidency, Church members were encouraged to “earnestly prepare to receive ordinances and make covenants with the Lord.”

Kyle Edmonds, a leader of the Church from Porirua, just north of Wellington, said, "What a blessing it is to have a temple in our midst in this beautiful part of the Lord’s vineyard. We love that the temple stands as a symbol of faith, hope and devotion to Jesus Christ. We look forward to seeing the windows of heaven pour over our region as individuals and whānau directly and indirectly become beneficiaries of the Lord visiting His house.”

The Wellington Temple will be New Zealand’s third temple, after Hamilton (dedicated in 1958 and rededicated after renovation in 2022) and Auckland (dedicated on 13 April 2025).

Temples allow for worship of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ, and are for the highest sacraments of the faith including ordinances or ceremonies to unite families for eternity.
