New Zealand Painter Sets Sights on International Art Competition

"I want my art to be as uplifting as the music that inspires it."

For New Zealand artist, Hendrik Ensing, being a part of the 2019 International Art Competition hosted by the Church History Museum of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, is about uplifting others.

Ensing was overjoyed that his mixed media artwork was selected recently to be included in the competition by a jury of five art professionals from around the globe.

The art competition, which runs every three years, began in 1987. The aims of the competition are, first, to discover and showcase Latter-day Saint artists from around the world, and second, to help develop the Church History Museum art collection.

When asked who or what inspires him to paint, Ensing said he's had many influences in his life, begining with his father who was an art teacher. He also considers well known New Zealand artist Buck Nin to be a mentor.

"I want my art to be as uplifting as the music that inspires it," Ensing says.

The piece Ensing is currently working on was inspired by music he listens to—written for, and sometimes by, Latter-day Saint youth.

"When I listen to the music as I paint, I find the message is bigger than the music, even bigger than the art alone," he said.

Ensing also uses original pieces of music composed by his friend, musician Josh Dawson, in his mixed media works of art.

"I was looking for a nice classical piece of music that would be congruent with my art," said Ensing.

When Ensing heard Dawson's music he knew that's what his art needed.

"I think it's great to have my music used in his paintings," Dawson said.

Ensing's wife Jenny plays a big role in his career as an artist.

Jenny Ensing works as a family counselor. Both Ensings have served as facilitators for the Addiction Recovery Program, sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Hendrik Ensing is currently serving as the ward clerk in his congregation.
