On Sunday, 14 November, in Mount Isa, Australia, at the invitation of Tane Kaka, local leader of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Mayor Danielle Slade attended a special Sunday worship service involving the children of the Primary.
“The children's messages of hope and love through their music and spoken word were inspiring and especially uplifting living in such challenging and perilous times,” President Kaka said.
Seated together with the congregation to watch the children, several times Mayor Slade commented to President Kaka how beautiful the children were and how they were able to speak and sing so confidently.
Mayor Slade shared her feelings on the family unit and how important it is to her. She spoke about Mount Isa being “a family-oriented place where we should all look after each other regardless of our ethnicity, backgrounds, and our religious beliefs, since we are so isolated from the rest of Australia.”
“Family is everything to me,” she added. “Much of the problems we are having in our small community are a result of dysfunction in the home.”
Two weeks prior to the worship service, President Kaka met with Mayor Slade to introduce himself and the Church. They discussed how multicultural and diverse the families and Church members are, and the richness of the experiences and faith they bring to worshipping in the Church of Jesus Christ.
During their conversation, President Kaka invited the mayor to attend a worship service. He was delighted to greet her as she arrived and expressed his gratitude for her interest and efforts to better understand some of the beliefs of the Church.
