“How can I get a good education and find the best career opportunities suited to my abilities?”
Many young people — and even the not so young — ask this question and wonder where to begin.
On Saturday, 3 June 2023, some helpful information was provided to guests who attended a career fair in the Melbourne suburb of Narre Warren. The fair was hosted by local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Local church leader, Riki Tukukino, explained, "The careers expo was aimed at supporting young adults into finding an education with purpose and gaining meaningful employment. We hope the expo has increased their confidence that with Heavenly Fathers help, they have limitless potential."
Volunteers helped attendees take aptitude tests which generated possible career interests. Visitors were then directed to “targets” on the wall, explaining the education needed for various careers. They were then informed about different education programs or directed to career counselors who could discuss specific fields.
Gary Gilbert, a physical education teacher, gave this advice: “What do you love to do? Money doesn’t make you happy. Find a career doing what you love.”
Jody McClellan, a self-reliance specialist, spoke to many young people who attended the event. She said that many young adults don’t know what information and options are available.
“Education and careers build confidence, open doors, and provide for families,” she said.
An attendee, Edyn Tuitupou, said, “This career fair has been very helpful. I came here with a plan. I want to be a nurse. Talking to another nurse solidified the path I want to take. This is very exciting and very helpful for my family.”
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will be hosting more career fair events for members and guests of the Church in other parts of Australia and the South Pacific over the coming months. Watch for Victoria/Tasmania updates here.
