Many young people wish to serve as missionaries with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but full-time missionary service may not be a good fit for them. Service missions allow for young people to stay at home and have flexible hours in the service they provide.

Some young people support Church distribution centres and other facilities, some work in Church departments such as communication, publishing services, welfare and self-reliance, and family history.

They also do community service to help in their neighbourhoods.
