French Polynesians Launch #LightTheWorld Initiative

Broadcast media and online videos give ideas for acts of service to do this Christmas season

For five years now, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has conducted an initiative called Light the World, which consists of a calendar containing ideas for daily acts of service during the days leading up to Christmas.

The program is centred on the Christmas spirit of Christ by giving joy, enhancing love, and reaching out in unity.

With the pandemic still raging in many parts of the world, each suggested daily act invites participants to love as He loved, to serve as He served, and to give as He gave.

In French Polynesia, on 1 December, Mirihau Tehihipo, the Church’s communication director of the Bora Bora Tahiti Stake, talked about #LightTheWorld on Polynesie TV channel 1, Radio Polynesie 1 and on Radio Bora Bora.

Mirihau said: “The core of this program is to prepare and spread the spirit of Christmas but in the Savior's way, that is, not centered on the material things. The #LightTheWorld calendar, which we can do individually or with family, is inspiring because it prepares us more completely to be like our Savior Jesus Christ. "

Moana Teriipaia, president of the Bora Bora Stake, said, “Jesus taught, 'I am the light of the world.' We are excited to celebrate this time of year with songs, acts of service, and messages of peace, love and hope from our prophet that we want to share with everyone. The primary objective is to come unto Christ.”

On Facebook, Narii Pou, a Young Adult leader of the Punaauia Tahiti Stake, brought together a dozen willing young people to create more than twenty animated videos to announce the challenges to be achieved each day leading up to Christmas.

Narii, the video project manager explains: “Making these videos is a way for us to participate and light the world. It allows us to capture the attention of young people our age and help them get involved in simple acts of service to follow Jesus Christ."

Elder Benjamin T. Sinjoux, a senior church leader in French Polynesia says that all these actions of service will give momentum to the month of December, with a promise that he says remains the same: “If we love and serve each day as Jesus did, we can end 2020 on a note of peace and hope.”
