Auckland Symphony Orchestra and Symphony Chorus Present 'Christmas Celebration: A Kiwi Christmas'

Interrupted by a fire alarm, the concert performers were resilient and the audience undeterred

Celebrating New Zealand’s cultures and languages through Christmas music, the 80-piece Auckland Symphony Orchestra and the Auckland Symphony Chorus, composed of local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, delighted a packed Auckland Town Hall on Saturday evening, 5 December.

Led by Peter Thomas, the orchestra and choir presented traditional carols, original numbers and Christmas singalongs.

Tina Cross, renowned New Zealand singer and guest soloist, debuted Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” in Te Reo Maori.

Ivoga Green, conductor of the choir for 12 years, led a hauntingly beautiful performance of Little Drummer Boy, with piano and percussion accompaniment.

Just as the song was ending, the fire alarm went off and everyone was evacuated.

Undeterred, the choir sang “Po filemu” outside, during the wait to re-enter the building.

Resuming the concert, everyone regrouped in good humour.
