Former Missionary in Niue Shares Experiences and Insights on New Zealand Radio

"I think it's such a special gift to speak Niuean and be connected to the culture"

Sergeant Tim Wilson of the Battleground Police Department in Washington, USA said Niuean people are usually shocked when he speaks to them in fluent Vagahau Niue.

Wilson learned Niuean as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints over 20 years ago, and he still works hard to keep his language up today.

As part of Niuean Language Week, Wilson shared some of his mission experiences in an interview with Radio 531pi. He also offered encouragement to those who are making an effort to study, preserve and use Vagahau Niue in their daily lives.

At 10:00, Wilson offers encouragement to Niuean speakers in the language he's worked hard not to lose for over 20 years.

"I don't want to lose a gift God gave me," Wilson said. "I think it's such a special gift to speak Niuean and be connected to the culture."
