Hospital Patients Find Refuge from Cyclone in LDS School in Tonga

An emergency request was received early in the morning from the 'Eua Hospital in Tonga to the principal of the Latter-day Saints' ‘Eua Middle School, Aloine Lupe Havea.

She was informed that the hospital had suffered severe damage from Cyclone Keni and they needed a refuge and shelter for their patients. The government building, normally used for storm sheltering had also been badly damaged.

The middle school was close and convenient and would now become a make-shift hospital.

A mother had just given birth to a baby boy during the chaos of the cyclone destruction. The mother along with her new-born soon were transferred with the other patients to the school.

It is hoped that the hospital will be repaired in time for school to resume next week, but if not, “Plan B” is temporarily moving classes to the Tongamama’o LDS Chapel.

Mormons believe that, wherever possible, we have the responsibility to provide relief and comfort to those in need.
