Elder K. Brett Nattress, of the Seventy, and First Counselor in the Pacific Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, met with Tuaolo M. Fruean, President of the American Samoa Senate, Vice Speaker of the House, Fetu Fetui Jr., and other members of the Senate and Legislature on Friday 5 November.
Paying respect to those who have gone before us, Elder Nattress said to the leaders, “We are grateful for the spiritual fathers in our lives, those who have mentored us and have showed us how to serve.”
DOWNLOADElder Nattress expressed gratitude and love to the leaders and all the people of American Samoa, for their efforts to raise strong families, love God and their fellow brothers and sisters, and to be and to do good in their homes and communities.
“The Savior taught the people to serve one another,” Elder Nattress said. “Jesus taught: ‘For whosoever will lose his life for my sake and the gospel’s sake, the same shall save it.’”
Quoting the Book of Mormon prophet and king, Benjamin, Elder Nattress shared with the lawmakers that Latter-day Saints believe that “when ye are in the service of your fellow beings, ye are only in the service of your God.”

“The Savior is at the center of everything we do. During the last week of His mortal ministry as recorded in the New Testament, the Savior went to the temple on Sunday,” Elder Nattress said. “He went again to the temple on Monday. And, He went to the temple on Tuesday. On Wednesday there is no record of His ministry. On Thursday, He suffered in Gethsemane. And then on Friday He was crucified.”
Elder Nattress added, “The temple was and is important to the Savior.”
Looking ahead to the completion of the construction of the Pago Pago American Samoa Temple, Elder Nattress said, “In the temple, we covenant with God to love and serve our fellow brothers and sisters.”
“It is my prayer that our members will become better husbands and truer wives in living their covenants with the Lord, better servants in our communities, and better and friendlier neighbors in the territory.”
