Clarifying a News Report in the Samoa Observer Regarding the Pago Pago American Samoa Temple Ground-breaking

Members of the Church in American Samoa look forward to the temple completion

In a recent article published by the Samoa Observer, it incorrectly stated that Elder Faapito Auapaau will preside at the 9 October 2021 ground-breaking ceremony for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ new temple in Pago Pago.

It has not yet been determined who will preside at this service. Travel restrictions associated with the COVID-19 pandemic will factor into the decision as to whether the presiding authority will be a local Church leader or a visiting leader from overseas.

Members of the Church in American Samoa are looking forward to the day when the temple will be completed.

Temples of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints differ from meetinghouses or chapels, where members meet for Sunday worship services. Each temple is considered a “house of the Lord,” where Jesus Christ’s teachings are reaffirmed through baptism and other ordinances that unite families for eternity. In the temple, Church members learn more about the purpose of life and make covenants to follow Jesus Christ and serve their fellow man.
