Church Thanks New Zealand's Greymouth Community with Open Day

After fire destroys former house of worship, new building will open to the public this Saturday for guided tours

New church doors are opening in Greymouth, New Zealand this Saturday and members of the public are invited to come and see The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ new meetinghouse.

The open day celebration is from 10am - 2pm on Saturday, 7 November 2020 at 1 Main South Road.

Local leader, President Lyle Kitchin, is looking forward to the chance to “thank our wonderful Greymouth community for their support."

Over the past nine months of construction, members of the congregation have met in Grey Main School and more recently in the premises of St. John's Ambulance.

"The community has been great to us,” says local member Hoani Weaver. "And yet it's nice to have a place that is ours, that we can look after and where we can help people to feel welcome."

The new building replaces the Church’s meetinghouse which was destroyed by fire in 2019.

Mr Kitchin hopes that "neighbours, friends and those who may be curious will come."

For Latter-day Saints, meetinghouses are hubs of religious and social life.

"We all are very pleased to have a new chapel and are looking forward to sharing it with the community on Saturday,” Mr Kitchin said.

"It's going to be special for us to worship together in sacrament meeting on Sunday."

Neighbours and others who are interested are always welcome to attend worship services of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
