Changes Made to Boundaries and Names of South Australian Latter-day Saint Congregations

Last weekend (4-5 May 2024), Elder Taniela B. Wakolo of the Pacific Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, visited Adelaide accompanied by Elder Craig Raeside, Area Seventy (regional leader).

During a stake conference (a stake is a regional group of congregations) in the Adelaide suburb of Firle, Elder Wakolo announced a number of changes to congregation names and boundaries.

The existing three stakes of Marion, Firle, and Modbury were combined into two stakes.

The Adelaide Australia Firle Stake was renamed to Adelaide Australia North Stake with the current Firle Stake Presidency retained as the presidency, with John Orth as the Stake President and Richard Bennallack and Todd Hann as Counsellors. The Marion Stake remains with Lok Nethercott as President, and Ivan Beckwith and John Chambers as Counsellors. Released from Modbury Stake were Matthew Nairn, President, and his counselors, Adam Williamson and Simon Roberts.

The Fulham Gardens, Mildura, and Robinvale congregations were transferred to the Adelaide Australia Marion Stake, with the following units discontinued: Adelaide Australia Modbury Stake, and the Prospect, Firle, Adelaide City, Tea Tree Gully, and Happy Valley congregations. New congregations were created from discontinued units: Mawson Lakes, Modbury, Marden and Noarlunga Downs. Types and boundaries of several congregations were also adjusted.

From time to time, Church congregations are created, discontinued, or combined—in response to membership, demographic and other factors.

After the meeting, Elder Wakolo said, “These changes came about after two years of prayers and counseling together by the three stake presidents, Elder Raeside, and the Area Presidency. When the approval was received from the First Presidency and Quorum of the Twelve Apostles it was to the delight of the leaders and members as this means more youth and members worshiping together. It is always about what’s good for the people.”

Elder Wakolo continued, “Sometimes decrease is increase, and the best increase is as John says in John 3:30, ‘He must increase, I must decrease.’ With all these changes and adjustments, the best change and adjustments are within us, the mighty change in our hearts that will help us sing the song of redeeming love (see The Book of Mormon, Alma 5:26). This will help us to love when love is expected; and more so, to love when love is not expected.”
