Auckland LDS Prepare to Plant 4,000 Trees and Honour Others Who Provide Service

Members of congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located in central Auckland are preparing to plant 4,000 trees tomorrow on the Rosebank Peninsula.

All who would like to help are welcome. Apples and a lunch will be provided. With wet weather likely, organisers encourage participants to bring gumboots.

The theme of this year's project comes from The Book of Mormon: "... when ye are in the service of your fellow beings ye are only in the service of your God."

This will be just one of many Mormon Helping Hands projects that will be completed by members and friends of the Church across the Pacific tomorrow.

In a meeting to be held Sunday evening from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. at 66 Rua Rd., Glen Eden, the LDS Waterview Stake (a stake is a group of congregations) will recognise two people who have provided noteworthy service to their community.

Catherine Farmer is a member of the Whau Local Board and a qualified planning commissioner. She has been a resident of the area for almost 50 years. Catherine also serves on the Portage Licensing Trust which, by way of grants to schools and community groups, returns funds generated in the area.

The second honouree, Darren Smith, has been the principal of the St. Leonards Road School for the last 22 years. He has also served as president of the Waitakere Area Principals Association and was one of the founding members of the Kelston Community Trust.

Congratulations and thanks to Catherine and Darren for their lives of service!
