American Samoan Latter-day Saints Celebrate 'International Day of the Girl'

Women and girls from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints participated last month in an ‘International Day of the Girl’ celebration held at Veteran’s Memorial Stadium in Tafuna, American Samoa.

The event, which ran from 20-25 October, was organized by the Women and Sports Commission of the American Samoa National Olympic Committee.

Participants included women and girls, aged 12 to 92, from many faiths, ethnic backgrounds and careers.

Activities included a beautification project that saw participants plant trees, paint buildings and clean the area in and around the Veteran’s Memorial Stadium.

The American Cancer Coalition organized a walk in remembrance of those who had died of cancer and to honour cancer survivors. Sports activities and demonstrations concluded the festivities.

Latter-day Saint women were invited to sing as part of the program for the final day of the event. Each wore a t-shirt with the message, “International Day of the Girl, I’m a Mormon.”   The nearly 200 member choir, conducted by Tagi Schwenke, performed two beloved Latter-day Saint hymns, “Love at Home,” and, “Teach Me to Walk in the Light.”

Shirley M. De La Rosa, national public affairs media specialist for the Church in American Samoa, said, “The Latter-day Saint women were the largest group from a single entity. These amazing women represented The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at the first International Day of the Girl. They not only supported a worthy cause, but demonstrated their love for the gospel and their desire to declare ‘I am a Mormon’ in a very positive way.”
