Young New Zealand Latter-day Saint Advocates For Peace

Believes all can influence peace whenever they reach out in love to help relieve suffering

Young Latter-day Saint, Desmond McBride, was a participant in the United Nations Association (UNA) conference 2021, held at New Zealand’s Parliament buildings on 13-14 August.

McBride joined delegates and guests engaged in advocating and promoting peace among all nations. Hon. Nanaia Mahuta, Minister of Foreign Affairs, was the keynote speaker at the event.

In his role as a UNA youth representative, McBride addressed the conference expressing concern that “principles of integrity and sincerity are being slowly eroded.”

He said, “Although, each of us is on a journey in life and experiencing different challenges, each of us has responsibility and accountability for others.”

McBride feels grateful for opportunities to be a youth leader, despite feeling anxious about the responsibility.

“My journey is filled with fear, frustration and self-doubt,” he admits. “I’ve had tears… questioning myself, ‘Can I do it?’”

McBride is from a small township in Huntly, New Zealand and is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Participating in Sunday church services with his family brings him peace.

“Although both my mother and father have supported me, the greatest assistance has come from my Heavenly Father and the Saviour’s many examples of how I should try to live.”

Currently, McBride is studying at Auckland University. His involvement with UNA started when he was a student at Fraser High School.

Latter-day Saints believe that having faith in Jesus Christ and keeping His commandments, brings feelings of personal peace and an increased desire to become influencers for peace in their families, their community, and the world.

Principles of peace and love centred in the gospel of Jesus Christ are taught in church services and at home. Members of the church covenant to keep the two great commandments: first, to love God; and second, to love their neighbours.

Church leader, President Russell M. Nelson, shared the following message during the faith’s worldwide General Conference in April 2021:

“The recent pandemic has been unique in that it has affected everyone in the world at essentially the same time. While some have suffered more than others, we have all been challenged in some way. Because of this, our common trial has the potential to help unite God’s children as never before… We show our love by serving. If you know of anyone who is alone, reach out—even if you feel alone too!”
