A group of young people from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sydney participated in an event hosted by Soka Gakkai International (SGI) at Sydney Olympic Park to discuss the value of education. The event was also attended by a diverse group of young people from a variety of different cultural backgrounds and faiths.
The group, Intercultural Youth Dialogue (IYD), was started by the Buddhist community in 2016. Young adults from The Church of Jesus Christ sat on the first organising committee and have been participating for several years.
The topic of this particular event was “Education”. The group discussed the benefits of education to individuals and the community, what is working well in our educational system and what improvements can be made. Participants included young people who came from New Zealand and Japan, and who shared their experiences with education in their home countries. The group expressed appreciation for teachers, especially during the difficult period where COVID-19 forced them to adapt their teaching and adopt new strategies in Online Learning.
Carler Toli who attended shared, "It was a very positive experience to meet people from different faiths and cultures and see how we can have conversations about topics that are of interest to everyone. It was also nice to make friends with people we don't usually associate with."
Church leaders encourage members to engage in efforts to increase literacy, learning, and skills training. “...seek ye diligently and teach one another words of wisdom; yea, seek ye out of the best books words of wisdom; seek learning, even by study and also by faith.” (D&C 88:118)
