Over the last three years in Gippsland, Victoria, the Wonthaggi congregation of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, has collaborated with St. Joseph’s Church and the St Vincent de Paul Society (affectionately known as “Vinnies”), Wonthaggi.
Members of both churches have worked together to collect non-perishable items to fill Vinnies’ pantry for their weekly, local food drive.
Leading up to Christmas, around 40 members of the Wonthaggi Branch collected 500 items that were used to prepare 250 hampers for the local Christmas food hamper drive.
Members of the Church met with hamper coordinator John Williams, from Wonthaggi Christian Life Centre, and representatives from the Anglican Church’s Wonthaggi Parish, Salvation Army, Uniting Church and St. Joseph’s Church at Wonthaggi Hall on 18 and 19 December 2023 to assemble 250 food hampers for local distribution.
All these organisations contributed items which combined to create festive hampers for needy families.
Everyone united in a Christ-like spirit of friendship to prepare these hampers which were gratefully received by those in need. Wonthaggi Latter-day Saint Ourania Fielding reported that the congregation hopes to assist with the hamper drive for 2024 and partner in other causes with the above organisations for years to come.
