Wellington Food Bags Fulfill a New Year Need

Wellington Interfaith Council welcomes the new year by providing support for individuals and families

Members of the Wellington Interfaith Council (WIFC) and friends welcomed in the New Year by putting together care packs of grocery items and giving them to struggling individuals and families in their community.

Prepared by WIFC volunteers, distribution of Emergency Weekend Family Food Bags will continue until Saturday 23 January.

Mere Fiore, a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and current WIFC Deputy Chair says, “There’s nothing better than serving our vulnerable and needy with extra grocery items. This is Interfaith in action.”

"I felt humbled by those who volunteered to pack 50 bags so quickly and more grateful to see smiles and talk with those in need," said Mere. "Big thank you also to the Salvation Army for use of a room and the Ministry of Social Development for funds."

"Last but not least to Wellington Interfaith Council members for picking up, sorting, and giving service to all our brothers and sisters.”

The Wellington Interfaith Council includes representatives of the major faiths in New Zealand. It hosts interfaith events and fosters dialogue between people of different faiths and spiritual practices.

One of the organisers of the food bags, Kumar Kumareswaran of the Sathya Sai Spirituality faith says, “This is a good opportunity to help people in need of food and make a difference in their lives when most of the social services are closed. What better gift can we offer them than this to overcome their hunger?”

Mike Scrivener, of the Anglican faith, shared encouraging words, “Jesus said: 'Feed my lambs.' God’s blessing on this service to the last, the lost and the least. We are all brothers and sisters in Christ.
