Patriarch

The word patriarch is used two ways in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints:

  1. An office of responsibility in the Melchizedek Priesthood. The calling of a patriarch is to give special patriarchal blessings to members of the Church. Patriarchs usually serve in this position for the rest of their lives.
  2. Another term for fathers. Adam was the first patriarch, and he was responsible for blessing his posterity and helping them live righteously.
