New Caledonia Youth Inspired by Pacific Leaders

Young members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered in Noumea, New Caledonia on 20 March to hear from Church leaders across the Pacific.

Pacific Area President, Elder Ian S. Ardern, delivered counsel from his office in New Zealand while Area Seventy Elder Frederic Riemer spoke to them from his office in French Polynesia.

The meeting was conducted by Adelia Temake, a leader in the young adult congregation in Noumea. More than 40 young people were in attendance and four members of the congregation shared their feelings about the gospel in their lives.

After the meeting she said, “I liked hearing about our divine nature, and that it is the most important thing we can hold on to.”

Stake President Georgie Guidi and other Church leaders met with the congregation in person.

“Tonight we heard from our leaders some simple messages about how we can be happy by following some simple truths, then doing some simple things and having simple faith.”

Elder Riemer counseled the young people to study the Book of Mormon regularly.

“This is the key to spiritual survival and avoiding the deceptions of Satan. It provides teachings that can help us find answers to the problems of today's society.

“It is important that you know who you are and what you mean to the Lord. He has a great work for you.

He also told them that they are “the future of the Church in New Caledonia.

“You are the parents and leaders of tomorrow and the Lord is counting on you to help bring salvation to every son and daughter of God in New Caledonia.”

Elder Ardern gave the final remarks of the evening and offered these points for the young people to consider:

  • Find ways to make your prayers more sincere.
  • Provide service. There is always someone you can help, and helping brings happiness.
  • Keep the commandments to increase your joy. Start with the commandment you have the most trouble with and then move to the next.
  • Read daily from the Book of Mormon. Don’t turn the page until you have found a message meant for you on the page.

He closed by encouraging them to stay true to the covenants they have made with God.

“If you do this, you will find true joy,” he said. “Nobody is alone in the Church so look around you and you will see someone who can help you stay on the covenant path.”
