Light the World "Giving Machines" are unique vending machines for charitable donations.
This Christmas season, giving machines are going mobile and digital for the first time in all the world.
The new machines were unveiled in a ribbon cutting ceremony at Riccarton Mall in Christchurch, New Zealand on 11 November 2024.
Sponsored and supported by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, these large, bright, red vending machines offer users the opportunity to feel the Saviour’s love and the joy of giving to others through donated purchases to local charities.
The new digital mobile machines introduce enhanced features with a format similar to a large smartphone.
For example, users can access online information about the different charities and fill a shopping cart with items they wish to donate.
Instead of dispensing snacks or drinks, these machines allow users the opportunity to purchase items such as meals, clean water, clothing, and educational supplies for those in need.
Each item represents a donation to a local or international charity. The Church covers all operating costs, ensuring that 100% of the donations go directly to the charities.
At the ribbon cutting ceremony in Christchurch, Elder Jared R. Ormsby, Area Seventy, said, “We try to follow the Saviour’s admonition to love God and love our neighbor. We believe that when we are in the service of our fellow beings, we are in the service of our God.”
He added, “These machines help people feel the spirit of giving and the love of God by contributing to those in need in our community.”
The new mobile digital giving machines opened the Christmas season in Christchurch and will be there for two weeks. They will then move to Queensgate Mall in Wellington on 28 November to 11 December. The final stop will be in Hamilton at the Chartwell Mall from 13-28 December.
Since their inception in 2017, Giving Machines have raised over $22 million USD, providing meals, clean water, and other essential items to people around the world.
The mobile Giving Machines are a testament to the power of collective giving and the spirit of the Christmas season.
By making it easy and fun to donate, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is helping to spread kindness and love to communities around the world.
