Latter-day Saint missionaries have a lot in common, whether it be the Book of Mormon they carry in their hands, down to the black name tag that idenitifes them. However, these missionaries are far from the same.
In fact, there are at least 25 countries represented within the missionary force serving in New Zealand alone.
Sister Lavanya Gorrela makes mission history by being the first South Indian sister missionary to ever serve in Auckland, New Zealand.
As her 18 month full-time missionary service comes to a close, she shared some of her thoughts on how becoming familiar with a different place and culture has created a lasting impact for her.
“When I received my mission assignment,” recalls Gorrela, “I didn’t know where New Zealand was!”
Being the first from her country to serve in Auckland caused some nervousness and extensive preparation. However, she looks back fondly remembering how the love and kindness of New Zealand locals helped make the transition easier.
Not only was she unfamiliar with the country, but she also had never come in contact with islanders before. “I had never heard of Tonga or Samoa! I love their warmth and respecting way,” says Gorrila.
“Here, everyone says ‘I love you’ often and back at home we don’t use those words so freely.”
At first, learning the language was her biggest hurdle, which is hard to believe considering how well she is able to express herself.
Gorrela, who is fluent in Telugu, said that “learning English on [her] mission has completely changed [her] life.”
She explained that many doors will open for her upon returning to South India simply because she can communicate comfortably in English.
When asked if her ties to New Zealand will be able to withstand the tests of distance and time, Gorrela said confidently, “Yes. I am sure about that. I’ve made great relationships with people I've taught, as well as the members of the Church. The same love I have for my parents I feel towards some of the people I have met here.”
Sister Gorrela is living proof that we are able to create long-lasting bonds with all people, regardless of culture or origin, if we dare to break out of our comfort zone.
