Improving the health of their friends and neighbours was the aim of a group of congregations of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Manukau area of Auckland, New Zealand on Saturday, 24 June 2023.
The health fair, at the Church's Kerr’s Road chapel, was conducted by the Auckland New Zealand Redoubt Stake (a group of congregations), in cooperation with Southpoint Family Doctors (SPFD), a general practitioner group based in Manukau, and operated by Dr. Fiona Shepherd and Dr Hinemaha Lutui.
SPFD doctors and their nursing staff performed free health screenings, such as blood pressure, blood sugar levels and heart checks, and administered free influenza, and measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccines.
Also participating in the health fair was BBM (Buttabean Motivation), a gym in Manukau operated by former professional boxer and community figure Dave Letele.
The BBM staff helped people complete and return their New Zealand census forms – an important service as the time for submitting the census forms was facing a critical deadline.
Natalie Green, of the Redoubt Stake, said the fair was held to encourage participation in vaccinations and the census.
“We decided to do this health fair with BBM and SPFD to get more people’s health protected and to get those census forms completed,” she said.
Pita Matagi brought three of his children to the event, straight from their netball game. “We came for our flu vaccines today, to ensure that we're safe and don't get ourselves or others sick,” he said.
Sulimoni Soe came to the health fair with her daughter and granddaughter. “I’m quite happy to be here today. We've gotten the chance to receive our vaccines, and we know that's important for everyone's safety,” she said.
In all, 118 flu vaccinations, 12 MMR immunizations and 150 different health screenings were provided. Additionally, 32 households completed their census forms, accounting for over 160 individuals.
Dr. Shepherd said, "The turnout for this vaccination event was much more than previous ones that we’ve participated in.”.
"One of the reasons I believed this happened is that the chapel is just a very familiar place for a lot of these people, their friends and family, both Church members and their friends," Dr. Shepherd said.
