As people across the South Pacific prepare for Easter and for the April broadcast of General Conference—a worldwide gathering of Latter‑day Saints and welcoming to all who wish to join—a group of young people from Collingwood Park, Queensland, Australia, have been reflecting on an experience they will never forget.
In October 2025, these Australian youth travelled to Utah to attend the semi-annual General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in person—an exceptional opportunity that very few young Australian Latter-day Saints may ever have.

The idea for the visit to Utah began during a youth planning meeting in late 2024, shortly after the group returned from For the Strength of Youth (FSY) Conference—a multi‑day programme for teenagers aged 14–18, similar to a youth leadership or values‑based camp. At FSY, young people take part in classes, group discussions, music, service, and team activities that help build confidence, resilience, friendship, and faith in Jesus Christ.
Leaders noticed how much the youth had grown—more confident, more united, and more focused on Christ. Wanting to build on that spiritual momentum, they began to explore the possibility of attending General Conference in Utah. After prayer and counsel with local leaders, youth, and parents, the ward felt united in moving forward.
Preparing With Purpose
Parents, leaders, and youth worked together through service, fundraising, and spiritual preparation. The group also learnt a Pacific cultural dance, which strengthened their unity and helped them celebrate their identity. Their first fundraiser—a food‑plate sale—brought families and youth together in a spirit of shared effort.
Warm Hospitality in Utah
When the youth arrived in Utah, Latter-day Saint congregations opened their doors with generosity. Members invited them to meals, youth activities, and Sunday worship. Local leaders, many of whom had never met the group before, helped organise tours, youth dances, and even a rugby league clinic for local youth.
Unexpected travel changes, including last‑minute transport issues, turned into moments of connection. Time spent driving together allowed leaders and youth to share stories, testimonies, and quiet conversations that strengthened their relationships.
A Tender Moment of Remembrance
Soon after arriving, the group learned of the passing of President Russell M. Nelson, President and Prophet of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Though they had travelled far hoping to hear him speak at General Conference, they felt deep peace as they remembered his teachings about Jesus Christ. Later, they were able to attend his public viewing—an experience they described as sacred and unforgettable.
Temple Service
One highlight of the trip was a visit to the Draper Utah Temple, where the youth participated in a sacred baptism ceremony performed on behalf of loved ones who have passed away. This reflects the Latter-day Saint belief that God offers His blessings to all of His children, both living and deceased.
Leaders said the peaceful experience helped the youth feel closer to God and deepened their understanding of why temples are important to members of the Church.
Looking Ahead to Easter and April General Conference
Now, home in Queensland, the youth are preparing—like other Church members across the Pacific—for Easter and the April General Conference. This time, they will join from their own chapels and homes. They hope others will feel the same message they felt in Utah:
- God knows each of His children.
- He answers prayers.
- And the blessings of Easter and General Conference are available to everyone, no matter where they live.
For these Australian youth, that message became the heart of their journey: no matter where we are—whether in a chapel in Brisbane, a home in Suva, a village in Samoa, or anywhere—heaven is as close as a prayer.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believe that God is our Heavenly Father, that He loves all His children, and that He has a divine plan for their growth, happiness, and eternal progression. They also believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God—and that He is the Saviour and Redeemer of the world.
