LDS Charities and Local Business Support Children's Charity

LDS Charities teamed up with a local business recently to support the New Zealand charitable organization “Feed the Need."

Feed the Need is a charitable trust set up in response to the issue of child poverty impacting the growth and development of many young New Zealanders.

Charity staff and volunteers prepare and deliver lunches to schools where many young people do not have lunches provided by their families. The charity also works with school administrators, community groups and parents in encouraging families to provide for their own children’s needs.

Kerry Owen is the director and founder of the organization. She has a background in catering and child welfare. Laurie Wharemate-Keung, who has a background in Maori public health and nutrition, is the board chair.

Representatives of LDS Charities and car company Toyota became aware of the work of Feed the Need and its challenges with transporting meals to children. The two organisations decided to donate a van to the charity to support its efforts.

Elder O. Vincent  Haleck, a member of the Pacific Area Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, represented LDS Charities at a small hand-over ceremony in Takapuna, Auckland recently. Michael Erikkila and Terry Lyndon represented Toyota at the hand-over.

“This is a wonderful donation.  We no longer have to rent unreliable transportation,” Ms Owen said.

“This project is not just about filling stomachs – it is letting these children know people care. That they are loved.”
