Latter-day Saints Prepare for Worldwide Conference

Over 100,000 members and guests of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are expected to attend the faith's semi-annual general conference in Salt Lake City, United States this weekend [6-7 October 2012].

Latter-day Saints and others will gather to hear messages of inspiration and instruction from Church leaders.  In addition to those who will attend the conference in person, proceedings will also be viewed and listened to via various media by people in 175 countries and territories, and translated into 94 languages.

Church President Thomas S. Monson and other Church leaders will speak during the five conference sessions.  Music will be provided by The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and other choirs.  Sermons and music will focus on the teachings of Jesus Christ, with the aim to strengthen individuals and families.

Members of the Church around the world, such as New Zealander Elijah Fruean, look forward to general conference with great enthusiasm.  “It provides me the opportunity to listen to and witness the teachings of living prophets and apostles,” he said.  “Our children love it as well.”

Other facts about general conference:

  • An estimated 600,000 people in North America will tune in on television on Sunday morning to view the Sunday morning session of conference.
  • Mormons in approximately 7,000 church buildings in 96 countries will watch conference via satellite broadcast.
  • Audio, video and text archives are published online in 84 languages after each general conference.
  • There were over 50,000 conference-related tweets during the October 2011 general conference, making the event one of the top 10 trends in the United States.
