Leaders and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints gathered with friends of the Church, including civic leaders, for the Wellington New Zealand Stake Conference this past weekend [25-26 August 2012].
Elder Craig C. Christensen, a member of the Church's Presidency of the Seventy, accompanied by his wife Debora, attended the conference. Elder Kevin W. Pearson, a member of the Pacific Area Presidency of the Church, along with his wife June, were also in attendance.
Leader of the Wellington Stake of the Church, President George Harvey, was released from his lay leadership position at the conference after nearly ten years of dedicated service. He was also recognized on the weekend for his many years of service to the broader community due to his efforts in interfaith relations, community relations and environment protection and beautification.
President Harvey is succeeded by Peter Thomson as the new Wellington New Zealand Stake President. A stake is similar to a diocese in some other Christian denominations. He will be the ecclesiastical leader for around 2,000 Latter-day Saints living in the central suburbs of Wellington. There are three other Mormon stakes in the greater Wellington region.
