Professor Mark Billinghurst is one of thirteen New Zealand researchers and scholars recently elected as Fellows of the Royal Society of New Zealand.
The announcement of his election was made at the Annual General Meeting of the Society’s Academy in Wellington recently (20 November 2013).
Professor Billinghurst is a researcher developing innovative computer interfaces that explore how virtual and real worlds can be merged.
Director of the HIT Lab New Zealand at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, he is a PhD from the University of Washington and conducts research in Augmented and Virtual Reality, multimodal interaction and mobile interfaces.
“My research is focused on Augmented Reality (AR), the combining of real and virtual images so that computer graphics can be overlaid on the real world,” he says.
He helped develop one of the most popular pieces of software for Augmented Reality which was used by hundreds of thousands of developers and millions of people, and has made other important contributions to the field. He was awarded the RSNZ Fellowship for having a significant impact in both academia and industry.
"I am very honoured to be elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society of New Zealand,” Professor Billinghurst says. “I have been doing research in computer interfaces for nearly 20 years and it is wonderful to be recognized by others in the New Zealand research community for the quality of my work."
Professor Billinghurst is a member of the Riccarton Ward (congregation) of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
