For members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the faithful payment of tithing expresses gratitude to God, and an individual’s willingness to obey this commandment that was instituted in the days of the Old Testament.
“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house, and prove me now herewith, saith the Lord of hosts, if I will not open you the windows of heaven, and pour you out a blessing, that there shall not be room enough to receive it” (Malachi 3:10).
The restoration of the gospel also brought a restoration of this commandment in modern times.

“And this shall be the beginning of the tithing of my people. And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever ..." (Doctrine and Covenants 119:3-4).
In all the examples below, the payment of tithing looks selflessly outward to provide an enduring answer to how Church members lovingly bless others.
The law of tithing:
- Cares for those in need through the humanitarian efforts of the Church – efforts that bless people worldwide regardless of race, gender, nationality or religion.
- Builds Church meetinghouses that allow all who desire to do so to more fully keep the Sabbath Day holy by attending Sunday worship services.
- Builds temples where those who qualify to enter, can go to the house of the Lord and make sacred promises to be honest and to live with integrity, to be faithful to their spouse and children, to seek the interest of their neighbours, and to be peacemakers.
- Supports missionary efforts throughout the world in answer to Christ’s command to, “. . . preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15).
- Translates and publishes scripture, “. . . that every man shall hear the fulness of the gospel in his own tongue, and in his own language” (Doctrine and Covenants 90:11).
- Promotes family history and genealogy research, “. . . turn[ing] the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers” (Malachi 4:6).
- Educates youth and the world over through religious and secular education that all can seek “. . . out of the best books words of wisdom; . . . seek learning, even by study and also by faith” (Doctrine and Covenants 88:118).
The ultimate example of looking outward is Jesus Christ. Even during His times of greatest suffering, He looked outward for how He could relieve the suffering of others. Tithing likewise invites Church members to look outward through the windows of heaven to find the most enduring blessings in mortality.
