Many members and friends of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been able to watch General Conference sessions on TV from their homes for the first time. Others viewed sessions on the Church’s YouTube channel and at ChurchofJesusChrist.org.
Samuel McKim, a beloved Church leader in Adelaide for over 50 years, had always watched General Conference at his nearest chapel, but he now resides in a nursing home.
He found watching Conference rather than just reading it, a “wonderful spiritual experience.”
“As I was watching the sustaining of the Church officers,” Brother McKim said, “I too lifted my hand to sustain them, and a strong feeling enveloped me. It was really reassuring to me, to watch the members raising their hands. I felt like I was there with them, even though I was on my own, in my room."
He said he especially enjoyed hearing Church President, Russell M. Nelson, speak, and was impressed with his announcement of 13 more temples to be built.
Mary Spalding of Wynn Vale, South Australia, expressed how wonderful it was to watch General Conference with her family.
Her husband, Dave, who suffers from memory loss due to a stroke, was able to pause the broadcast and share his thoughts and insights with his wife and family immediately, not needing to wait until the talk ended.
He said that he felt the power of the message given by Brother Bradley R. Wilcox, and was "very moved by the Spirit.”
Tamara O’Neill said as she was watching the Saturday morning conference session on YouTube, she felt the Spirit touch her heart many times, both as she listened to the talks and during the beautiful music. A single mother of five children, her path has not been easy.
Recalling listened to the talk given by Elder Clark G. Gilbert, “Becoming More in Christ: The Parable of the Slope,” she said, “His words really resonated with me, and I knew I needed to focus on my life ahead, and not let what had happened in the past drag me down.”
Robin Hill, of Modbury Heights said, “It was easier for me to focus on the talks watching the Conference from home, and I was more able to feel and be taught by the Spirit.”
The message that stood out for him was, “The importance of doing small basic things on a regular basis and endeavouring to become a little better each day.”
