Raging waters have overflowed river banks in several Fijian towns and villages flooding streets and homes and displacing residents. Nadi is one of many affected towns.
Elder Taniela Wakolo, Area Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and Fiji Service Centre Manager for the Church in Fiji, reports there are no injuries or deaths among Church members to date.
"The missionaries are also safe," he says, "and are assisting with evacuation when needed."
"All chapels are secured and safe. The Nawaka and Nadi chapels are being used as evacuation centres and currently there are 72 who are being sheltered, including 33 members."
Members of the Lautoka Stake Presidency are using a 4-wheel drive vehicle to check on their members and assist in transporting those who are in need to higher ground or a designated shelter. Ward leaders are regularly visiting the chapels being used as evacuation centres to ensure that evacuees' needs are being met.
