Setting time aside each week to spend time with family is an important priority for many members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in New Zealand.
Rhandell, Reece, Peyton and Moetu Tuala-Fata are one family of thousands who enjoy what Latter-day Saints call "Family Home Evening" every Monday night.
Rhandell says having the time together each week "is a priority in our family."
"Our daughter who is four years old enjoys conducting our family home evening. Our activities vary from learning musical items, sports (which we are very passionate about), and baking."
She adds, "We love family home evening because we get to help each other. And as parents, it helps prepare our children to lead in the home."
Quoting the Latter-day Saint statement, "The Family: A Proclamation to the World," Rhandell says they are finding that: "Happiness in family life is most likely to be achieved when founded upon the teachings of the Lord, Jesus Christ."
Recently the family hiked up Te Mata Peak, Hawkes Bay.
"We love spending quality time together and enjoy the outdoors," Rhandell says.
Another Kiwi family, the Lawrences, use the time each Monday evening to learn, talk, listen and have fun together. In a recent family home evening, they talked about why and how to pray.
Auckland mother, Jacinda, taught a lesson on increasing one's talents during a recent family home evening. The family compared the way popcorn expands to the way we can enlarge our knowledge and skills, with effort. After the lesson the children played a game of "Popcorn Olympics."
Latter-day Saint families throughout the world use family home evening time to strengthen family relationships, talk about what's coming up for the family, work out problems, teach good principles, and have fun.
