Elder Jeff and Sister Judy Brock, senior missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, led a 12-week course in Kiribati to help people lose weight and lower blood sugar to prevent diabetes, a disease which is prevelant in the Pacific islands.
The course, called "Eat Healthy and Be Active," helps teach people to make good eating choices, the importance of exercise, how to plant gardens for healthier diets and generally how to live a healthy lifestyle.
For the class in Kiribati, 35 people enrolled and lost a combined 233kg (513 lbs). The largest percentage loss was 13.74% (15.1kg), with the average weight loss for these 35 people at 6.5% of their body weight, and 13 lost 9% and three lost 13%. Two class members improved their blood sugar numbers from 218 to 77 and 319 to 160.
"These are amazing achievements!" Sister Brock said.

The winners with the highest weight loss asked for gardening tools and a wheelbarrow as reward for their accomplishment. They will now be able to grow their own food and continue to eat healthy.
Elder Brock said, "We congratulate all the participants in their progress on the way to a lifetime of healthier living and activity."
