Construction Program Moves Forward in Response to Church Growth

“Plans to build one of the nation’s largest Mormon churches in Augustine Heights are a step closer, with members expected to submit an application for building approval before the end of the year,” Brisbane’s Courier Mail reports this week.

“The multi-million, 1200-seat Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will rank among that largest in the Pacific region, with teaching rooms, offices, a library and a multipurpose hall.”

This is one of 20 major building projects The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is currently pursuing in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the islands of the South Pacific.  This includes six new meetinghouses and 14 extensions and renovations to existing buildings. 

Last year 13 new Latter-day Saint meetinghouses were constructed throughout the South Pacific. “Our church has over 15 million members worldwide, and approximately half a million of that number live in Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea and the South Pacific islands,” Pacific Area President, Elder James J. Hamula said.

“As a church we strive to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ. Many of our neighbours, relatives and friends are getting to know us and want to know more about our faith. This is leading to thousands of new members each year, whom we love and welcome.”

“We are working together to raise strong families, serve in our communities and make our nations and territories better places to live,” he said.
