Clean Water Brings Joy to Vanuatu Villagers

For many people throughout the South Pacific, accessing clean water is a daily challenge that significantly impacts their quality of life.

Recognising this need, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently focused on helping residents in four villages on the Vanuatu island of Tanna.

The Church, in cooperation with Vanuatu Agricultural Supply, engaged with community leaders to identify their water needs and available sources. Four villages, Naluken, Loupukas, Lapkit and Lume, were identified as needing a clean water supply.

Prior to the completion of the project, some of the villagers were walking kilometres a day to carry water back for cooking, cleaning and bathing children.

The Church assisted with design, materials and training while the community provided labour to install the system. The labour included building water collection boxes, digging and burying piping, and helping to install large water tanks, solar panels and village taps.

Those involved worked closely with Vanuatu Agricultural Supply and the Church humanitarian missionaries to learn how the system works and how to maintain it when it is finished.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provides aid to people around the world without regard to cultural or religious affiliation.
