    Church Presents Traditional Leader with Framed Picture of Jesus Christ

    Gift underscores centrality of the Saviour in Church’s teachings, and Latter-day Saints’ support for governments and the rule of law

    John Mateara, a leader in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Cook Islands, recently presented a framed picture of Jesus Christ to Mr Travel Tou and Mrs Debbie Tou.

     Mr Tou is President of the House of Ariki, a parliamentary body in the Cook Islands.

    According to Wikipedia, “it is composed of Cook Islands high chiefs (ariki), appointed by the Queen's Representative. There are up to twenty-four members, representing different islands of the Cooks.”

    The 11th Article of Faith of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints states: “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may." 

    The 12th Article of Faith states: "We believe in being subject to kings, presidents, rulers, and magistrates, in obeying, honouring, and sustaining the law.”

    Jesus Christ is central to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which bears His name. Members of the Church believe Jesus is the Son of God, the Only Begotten Son in the flesh (John 3:16). Latter-day Saints accept the prophetic declarations in the Old Testament that refer directly and powerfully to the coming of the Messiah, the Saviour of all mankind. Church members also accept the New Testament accounts of the birth, life and ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
