Church Leaders Visit Newly Elected Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu

The COVID-19 pandemic and state of emergency resulting from Cyclone Harold didn’t stop Vanuatu from holding a general election on the 19th of March, 2020.

As a result of the election, a new government was organised and Honourable Bob Loughman was elected as the new Prime Minister of the Republic of Vanuatu on the 20th April, 2020.

Leaders in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints—Port Vila Vanuatu Stake President, Yvon J. Basil; and Port Vila Mission President, J. Benoit Duquette—visited the Prime Minister earlier this month to make introductions and to discuss ways the Church is helping Vanuatu and many of its citizens.

The Prime Minister thanked the leaders for the Church's humanitarian assistance following Tropical Cyclone Harold.

He also expressed appreciation for the Church's support of school students through its P-13 School program, an initiative that assists families as they help their children pursue their education.

He stated that the visit was very timely as his government is exploring ways the country can better prepare for future natural disasters, such as cyclones.

The Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the ongoing relationship the Church has with the people of Vanuatu.

President Duquette shared, "It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with the Honourable Prime Minister Bob Loughman. During our meeting, he quickly expressed his sincere appreciation and respect for past and present contributions made by the Church and the people of different faiths to support families and communities in everyday life and in time of crisis."

He continued, "We are grateful for the warm welcome enjoyed by our missionaries, thus allowing them to serve the people of this great country in every possible way."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teaches its members to be good citizens, to obey the laws of the land, and to help lift lives, fortify families and contribute to caring communities.
