Rejoicing in the Resurrection of Jesus Christ Across the South Pacific

Members and friends of the Church gather to give thanks for the gifts of Jesus Christ this Easter season

Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints worshipped in special sacrament meetings on Easter Sunday across Australia, Papua New Guinea, New Zealand and the island nations and territories of the South Pacific.

Similar sacrament meetings were held in Church meetinghouses around the world on Easter Sunday.

Latter-day Saints also joined with other Christians to mark the Holy Week and Easter Sunday in a variety of other events.

In Ahiparapara, a small fishing village at the base of Te Oneroa a Tohe (90 Mile Beach) in New Zealand, local Church leaders shared a positive Easter message and invitation to attend a Sabbath day Easter service.

Bishop Dave Lasike said he appreciated the simplicity of the message and invitation to neighbours and friends to join in worship on Easter Sunday. He reported increased numbers in attendance on 9 April, noticeable because usually local members were away for the long weekend, and still the chapel was full.

Jean-Olivier B. Smatti, a leader in the Church in New Caledonia said at an Easter musical devotional,  "Our young people sang a truth: Jesus Christ lives. I know that Jesus Christ loves us and wants to make himself known to us. Let us remember Him this Easter day when He broke the chains of death for us."

In Melbourne, Australia, Thai Do, a lay leader in a Vietnamese language congregation, said, “There was darkness at the crucifixion because the God of Light died. Jesus Christ is our Light. He is my personal Saviour whom I love and owe a great debt. That is Easter to me.”

Liani Rorason, from Rotorua, New Zealand, said, ““I have loved the messages during Holy Week. It has helped us to reflect on the most sacred events that took place during the last week of our Saviour Jesus Christ’s life.

Ronnie Pinker of the Tarawera Ward (congregation) has been creating flower arrangements for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints' meetinghouse in Rotorua for 20 years. The beauty of her flower arrangement on Easter Sunday helped enhance the spirit in the meeting for this special day of worship.

Jane Furey, from Queensland, Australia, said, "I am continually humbled, awed and inspired by the example of our Saviour Jesus Christ. The seemingly small moments, the tender gestures, His insightful awareness of our needs. Even when we say nothing...He tarried anyway."

She continued, "And, yes, He is risen. He folded the cloths so we would know He is coming back. I love this Brother of mine, of ours. He gives me, and you, confidence and courage, belief, hope, and joy.

I can do all things through Him. So can you..."
