BYU Living Legends to Tour New Zealand and French Polynesia in May 2023

30 dancers prepare to share their Latin American, Native American and Pacific stories

Brigham Young University (BYU) Living Legends will celebrate their Latin American, Native American and Pacific heritages with inspired dance, music, and costumes, during their upcoming tour to New Zealand and French Polynesia in May 2023. 

The performers are 30 students from BYU Provo, a college sponsored by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The BYU Living Legends tour will include 11 shows, as well as workshops with secondary school students to encourage them to seek higher education and community service projects.

The tour will also include devotional meetings held at selected meetinghouses. The students will share their faith in and their love for Jesus Christ and His gospel through spoken word and music.

Devotionals will be held at meetinghouses in Penrose on Sunday, 7 May, 7:30pm and in Porirua on Sunday, 14 May 2023, 6:00pm.

Artistic Director, Jamie Kalama Wood, has an extensive background in performing and teaching. She has performed in Europe, Hawaii, New York, and all-around North America. Additionally, she has taught in India, New York, and across the Unites States. She has been an actor, choreographer, soloist, and director for a variety of plays musicals, and movies.

She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from BYU in music dance theatre in 2002, and her Master of Fine Arts in musical theatre from San Diego State University in 2006. In New York, she worked for well-known companies, including Disney Theatricals, the Metropolitan Opera Guild, and Roundabout Theatre Company.

Jamie's family has been part of Living Legends from the group's beginning. When talking about the program, Jamie said, "The Living Legends program is inspired by God. He cares for these students, our people and the gospel message that this group can share in a way that is unique to them." Jamie is thrilled to be at BYU and is excited to continue the legacy of Living Legends.

BYU Living Legends toured New Zealand and Tonga in 2016.  The group recently performed in Mexico.  During COVID 19, students performed at Brigham Young University and shows were broadcast across the globe.
